This is a PDF printable pattern to create a leather bag - The Keel Bag. Short shoulder bags (often referred to as an "under-the-arm" bags) that tuck snugly directly under one’s arm, resting at the upper rib cage rather than hanging at the hip continue to be trendy and a preferred choice for many especially during the summer. The Keel Bag came to life with such a short handle and carry style in mind. The design shifts a gusset type usually used on the side of a bag to its front for a stylish, modern and clean look. The Keel Bag pattern comes in two build variations. The fully lined Keel with a hidden magnet closure will radiate quiet luxury while the non-lined version will give more casual but trendy vibes when bold color and textures combinations are used.

THE KEEL BAG

Bag dimensions: 21.5/13.5/7.5 cm ~ 8.5/5/3 inches
Handle drop: 26cm (just a bit over 10 inches)

The Keel Bag: Non-lined Version
Leather: 2.2-2.4mm (5.5-6oz), medium temper. All pieces will fit onto a 60cm by 32cm leather panel which is ~2 sq. feet of leather. The longest piece - the handle- is 58cm and the widest one is ~14cm. See the illustration below on how such a panel of leather looks like with the pattern pieces laid out on it.
Closure: you can use a closure of your choice - magnetic closure, a snap button, a button stud or even the 20mm magnet closure from the Lined Version.
Some notes on the leather: if you use different leathers for the different elements on the bag, you can bump up the thickness of the Gusset and the Handle and their temper can be stiffer than the rest.
The Keel Bag: Lined Version
Main leather: 1.8-2mm (4.5-5oz) thickness, see notes on temper below. All pieces will fit onto a 60cm by 32cm leather panel which is ~2 sq. feet of leather. The longest piece - the handle- is 58cm and the widest one is ~14cm. See the first illustration below on how such a panel of leather looks like with the pattern pieces laid out on it.
Leather for the lining: 0.6-0.8mm (1.5-2oz), see notes on temper below. All pieces will fit onto a 60cm by 30cm leather panel which is again ~2 sq. feet of leather. The longest piece - the handle - is ~59cm and the widest one is ~15cm. See the second illustration below on how such a panel of leather looks like with the pattern pieces laid out on it.
The combined thickness of the main leather and the leather for the lining should add up to 2.2-2.4mm (5-6oz) and result in medium temper when glued together. You can go thicker as long as you maintain the medium temper once the two leathers are glued together. For example, for the lined bag shown in the instructions, I used a relatively soft Minerva Box at 1.8mm (4.5oz) and soft pigskin at 0.8mm (2oz) for a total of 2.6mm (6.5oz).
Closure hardware: 2 x 20mm diameter magnets. You can also explore other types of hardware or leather-only closures, however patterns/instructions for such are not included in the files.
Basic Instructions
> Measure and cut on the outside edge of the lines.
> Stitching holes in the pattern are spaced at 4mm, however due to curves and irregular shapes might differ slightly at some spots.
> Please read through the Assembly Instructions file before commencing the build.
