This is a PDF pattern to create a leather bag - The Barge Bag.
The Barge Bag pattern utilizes the so-called “three-piece single gusset” technique but switches what would usually be the front/back of the bag to be the gussets on both sides of the bag.
This makes up for some unique looks and allows the D-ring loop to be part of the gusset panel itself. Gussets become a focal point of the bag and can be further highlighted by using a different colored leather for them. They can be also tooled and carved for the same purpose. The bag is designed for cross-body or on shoulder carry and comes with three strap options – two leather straps and a purse chain.
The stitching holes in the pattern are 4mm from the edge (unless noted otherwise in the pattern) and spaced at 3.85mm. There are two different approaches to assemble the bag - both require punching all stitching holes on the panels before assembly: 1) "no glue" assembly that involves finishing all edges before putting the bag together and results in a more rugged, split edge looks. This is my personal preference showcased in the natural leather bag in the listing pictures. 2) "glue" assembly: the sequence of steps is the same as the "no glue" approach but the edges that will be stitched are glued together, then stitched and then finished for a more uniform look.

The Build
Skill level: Advanced
Leather:
> 1.8-2.0mm thickness (4.5-5oz), medium temper for the bag
> You can fit all panels for the bag body onto a 55/25cm (~22/10in) leather panel or a total of 1.5 sq feet of leather.
> 2.0-2.2mm thickness (5-5.5oz) for the strap. The strap is 20mm (4/5 of an inch) wide and you need two pieces – one 48cm (~19in) long and one 90cm (~35in) long.
Pattern specific tools/materials:
> 1mm, 2mm, 3mm, 4mm and 5mm hole punches
> 2 x 20mm D-rings
> Strap Option A: 2 x button studs and 2 x 20mm swivel clasp buckles
> Strap Option B: 1 x 20mm whole belt buckle and 2 x 20mm swivel clasp buckles
> Strap Option C: a purse chain between 80cm and 120cm long. Those are available in many variations online when searching for a “purse chain”. They usually come with swivel clasp buckles already attached to them.
> Always print at 100% for the pattern to work correctly. Measure and cut on the outside edge of the lines. Please review the full instructions before commencing with the build. :)
