This is a PDF pattern to create a leather cross-body bag - The Barbette Bag. The leather template includes a pattern to make an adjustable webbing strap or a leather strap.
The second option is to use a purse chain of various lengths for a light stylish carry. Alternatively, you can make a fixed-length leather strap using the included patterns. The Barbette Bag is a turned bag.
This means it is stitched with its flesh side out and then turned inside out – this reveals the grain side of the leather and ‘hides’ the stitches on the inside of the bag. Bag dimensions:
20/15/6 cm ~ 7.9/5.9/2.4 inches
Skill level: Advanced
Leather: 1.8-2mm thickness (4.5-5oz), soft to medium temper
> You will need a 42/41cm (~17/17in) leather panel for the bag which is
approximately 1.9 sq feet of leather.
Pattern specific tools/materials:
> 1 x 25cm long #5 closed-end zipper
Strap options:
1. Webbing Strap
> 1 x 30mm wide and 125cm long webbing
> 1 x 30mm wide and 20cm long webbing
> 2 x 20mm D-rings
> 2 x 20mm swivel clasp buckles
> 1 x 30mm rectangle ring
> 1 x 30mm strap slider
2. Purse Chain
Purse chain between 100cm and 130cm long. Those are available in many variations online when searching for a “purse chain”. They usually come with swivel clasp buckles already attached to them.
3. Leather Strap
> 2-2.2mm thickness (5-5.5oz) leather. The strap is 20mm (4/5inches) wide
and you need two pieces – one 48cm (~19in) long and one 90cm (~35in) long.
> 4mm and 5mm hole punches
> 2 x 20mm D-rings
> 2 x 20mm swivel clasp buckles
> 1 x 20mm whole belt buckle
> Note: stitching holes in the pattern are 4mm from the edge (unless noted otherwise in the instructions) and spaced at 3.85mm, however illustrative in nature. You can use other spacing based on your pricking irons or stitching chisels, or aesthetic preferences.
> Always print at 100% for the pattern to work correctly. Measure and cut on the outside edge of the lines. Please review the full instructions before commencing with the build. :)
